Introduction

You are an alien who recently landed on Earth. You want to find out more about this place called the library so you can go back to your own planet and tell your friends about these things called books!

Your task is to answer four questions to learn more about how the library is organized. Using the Big6 as a guide, you will define your task, identify sources, gather information, put your information together on the worksheet, and evaluate the results.

The Task (THE QUESTIONS)

(Task Definition-What needs to be done?)

  1. Find out the difference between Fiction and Non-Fiction.

  2. List the ten basic Dewey Decimal System categories.

  3. Learn and write about Call Numbers.

  4. Look up the person Melvil Dewey and tell about him in your own words.

The Process (PLAN)
(What questions to I need to ask or answer and how will I answer them?)

Your mission is to find the answers to the following questions. Each member of your group should research one of the following questions, being sure to follow directions listed in The Task section.

3. What are call numbers?

4. Who was Melvil Dewey?
Do we really know Dewey?

Putting it all Together (DO)

(Synthesize-What can I make to finish the job?)
You must complete the worksheet provided. Each member of your group should have answered their question, and you will put them all together on one sheet.

When you go back to your own planet, your alien friends will understand all about the earthlings library by watching your presentation.

Evaluation
(REVIEW)
(How will I know I did my job well?)

Judge your product

Before turning in your assignment, compare it to your teacher's requirements.
  • Did you do and include everything that was required?

  • Did you give credit to all of your sources, and did you write it the way your teacher requested?

  • Is your work neat?

  • Is your work complete and does it include heading information (name, date, etc.)

  • Would you be proud for anyone to view this work?

6.2 Judge your information problem-solving process

Think about what you did to finish this assignment. You may have learned some skills to use anytime you need information to answer questions!
  • What skill(s) did you learn that you can use again?

  • How will you be able to use the skill(s) again?

  • What did you do well this time?

  • What would you do differently next time?

  • Which information sources were most useful?
You may be able to use them again when you need information.

  • What information sources did you need but the library did not have? Talk to your librarian about the possibility of getting them.

Conclusion

Congratulations! You have successfully completed your mission!
